On Wednesday 18 June, Scivil, together with ECS and ECSA, is organising the Citizen Science Fair 2025. Join us in the garden of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences between 10:30 and 17:00 to explore a wide range of citizen science projects. Visit the info stands, get inspired, and find out how you can take part in science yourself. Admission is free and everyone is welcome!

The Citizen Science Fair is a prelude to the Cluster Event 'Advancing Public Engagement and Citizen Science in the ERA', that will take place on June 19.

Are you a nature lover, stargazer, weather expert or more of an environmental activist? Take our quiz 'Which type of citizen scientist are you?' and discover which profile suits you best. Afterwards, you can explore projects that match your interests on platforms such as Zooniverse, eu-citizen.science and SciStarter. 

Are you the organiser of a citizen science project? Feel free to share the quiz with your participants, it's a great way to help them discover their citizen science profile and get even more engaged with your project!

• 19 June: Cluster Event: This European event builds on the Citizen Science Fair and focuses on public engagement in research.
• 3 July: Let's Talk Science Summerschool: Scivil will run a workshop on how to get started with citizen science.
• 8 July: PReCISE Summerschool (UCLouvain): Scivil will give a workshop on effective communication in citizen science, based on our communication guide.

On 14 and 15 April, the Scivil team travelled to Leiden (Netherlands) for an inspiring working visit to Citizen Science Netherlands. We got to know their approach in more detail, exchanged experiences on supporting citizen science in both Flanders and the Netherlands, and explored ways to connect and strengthen our networks. It quickly became clear that there are many shared interests and promising opportunities for collaboration between CS-NL and Scivil. To be continued!

To promote citizen science and support citizen scientists, UCLL University of Applied Sciences developed a range of tools within the Ent.r.e.novators project, including the maturity model that maps researchers' engagement skills. All materials developed (such as the skill mapping game, an introduction to citizen science, and the levels of engagement) are freely available via the E³UDRES² Ent.r.e.novators Citizen Science Toolkit.

Telraam has launched a new overview page where you can explore projects worldwide that use their participatory traffic counters. Discover all Telraam networks and find (local) projects still looking for participants.

How serious is plastic pollution in our rivers? The European INSPIRE pilot project combines technology and citizen science to detect and reduce riverine plastic waste. In Flanders, VLIZ, VITO and River Cleanup are mapping the impact on the Scheldt using drones, smart cameras and citizen observation via the JRC Floating Litter Monitoring app.

The European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) has published a new position paper outlining the future of citizen science in Europe. The paper highlights the essential role of citizen science in innovation, policy, and society, and advocates for its strong inclusion in FP10, the next European research and innovation framework programme.

Curious to know how well citizen science is embedded in your library, museum, or university? The European Citizen Science project group has developed a free self-assessment tool to help organisations evaluate the level of citizen science integration within their structures.

From 4 to 7 March 2026, the ECSA Conference will take place in Oulu, Finland. Preparations for this conference are moving into the next phase. The call for panels, roundtables, and workshops has now closed. A second call for papers, posters, and pitches will open on 25 June. The deadline to submit your contribution is 7 October 2025.

The Mutual Learning Exercise (MLE) on public engagement in research and innovation (R&I) has published two new reports. These highlight the need for clear, ambitious initiatives and incentives for all stakeholders, as well as examples of successful cross-border collaborations in the European Research Area (ERA).

Every month, Scivil interviews someone about their experiences with citizen science. This month, we spoke with Eleonora Tilkin-Franssens, practice-based researcher and lecturer at UCLL (Inclusive Society, SRW) and AP University of Applied Sciences (People & Society, TP), about how to tailor and facilitate research for neurodivergent participants.

On 18 June, the Citizen Science Fair, organised by Scivil, ECS, and ECSA, will take place in Leopold Park, Brussels. 

The ECS project is organising a Cluster Event on 19 June in Brussels, focusing on 'enhancing public engagement and citizen science in the European Research Area.'

The EuroGard10 Conference will take place from 22 to 26 September in Rome, Italy. The event will bring together experts, researchers, and practitioners to explore the role of botanical gardens in biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration projects.

On 2 October 2025, Citizen Science Nederland, Waag Futurelab, and the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences' 'Kennis Maken' programme will host the National Citizen Science Expo.

On 6 and 7 November 2025 the second global conference on citizen science for health will take place in Zurich, Switzerland.
